POV: RIN
SCENE: 穏やかな幕開け
Time: 10:00 a.m.
The scene starts at the cram school. Rin wakes up after having fallen asleep during Yukio’s class. After the lecture is over, two exorcists enter the classroom, one of whom is introduced by Yukio as Hesse Barthes; the other introduces herself as Neue Milan. Renzou is immediately interested in Neue.
Yukio announces to the class that, starting tomorrow, there is to be conducted a special training camp within a place called Labyrinth Garden. He explains that, up until recently (upon Barthes’ discovery), the key to the Labyrinth had been missing and the place had not been used for over 100 years. Barthes very briefly explains that the Labyrinth Garden is said to have been created by Rhone Rain in the Middle Ages. He says that the Labyrinth Garden is a place where imagination can be brought to life, existing within a “subspace” that can only be entered and exited with a special key.
The students express concern at Barthes’ poor attitude and brevity. Ryuji states that he is worried about the safety of training in the Labyrinth Garden, but Neue assures him that it is safe and has been tested. She then goes on to explain that she has been helping Barthes with his research.
Yukio explains that the training’s purpose is both improvement of skills and deepening of solidarity with peers. He then states that they will be staying in the old boys’ dormitory for the duration of the training. Neue announces that she will not be accompanying the students for training, and Yukio then confirms that the training will be supervised by Barthes and himself. Yukio notes that basic necessities will be provided but that the students will have to buy their own supplies and goods. Rin seems concerned about this.
Neue, Barthes, and Yukio all leave the classroom. Renzou talks about how much he likes Neue, with which Rin agrees.
Shura then enters the classroom. She says that she could hear the students down the hallway, and she asks what they’re so excited about. She asks if there’s a new exorcist, to which Renzou answers yes and that she’s a beautiful woman. Shura asks for her name, and Rin tells her but misremembers it as “Nojima.” Shura doesn’t seem too impressed by or concerned with the name.
Shura then asks Rin to come with her into the hallway. She tells him that she had heard about the Labyrinth Garden training and that Mephisto had ordered her to return kurikara to Rin solely for its duration. Shura seems to dislike the idea, but she gives Rin the sword anyway. She warns Rin to be careful when drawing it, and then leaves.
POV: YUKIO
SCENE: 穏やかな幕開け

The scene initially plays out the same as it does in Rin’s POV. After Barthes and Neue leave the classroom, Yukio does so as well, and Izumo follows him into the hallway. Izumo asks if he can tell her more about the Labyrinth Garden as Barthes’ explanation was so lacking. Yukio admits that he doesn’t know much about it either and was going to go get materials about it from Barthes. He offers to go to the library together with Izumo to learn more about it. They both have other errands to run first, so they agree to meet there later.
Shiemi then shows up, asking Izumo if she needs any medicinal herbs. Izumo dismisses her question, saying that it’s none of her business, and then walks off.
POV: RIN
SCENE: 空虚の財布
Time: 11:00 a.m.
The scene changes to outside by the fountain on campus. Ryuji, Renzou, and Konekomaru are discussing things that they want to buy before heading to the old dormitory for training. They comment that Rin must not need anything since he already lives there. Rin acts like he is in agreement with this, but worries to himself about how he’s out of exorcism supplies.
Izumo suddenly runs in their direction with Shiemi chasing after her. She orders Shiemi not to follow her around. Shiemi asks Izumo if she needs any medicinal herbs. Izumo dismisses the question, saying that it’s none of her business. Shiemi insists that she can give Izumo whatever herbs she might need. Izumo dismisses her again and leaves, but Shemi continues to follow. Ryuji and Renzou dismiss the interaction as the girls messing around. The two of them along with Konekomaru bid Rin goodbye and leave.
After they’re gone, Rin takes out his wallet, shaking it upside down, and finding that he only has seventeen yen. He decides that he’ll ask Yukio for money, and searches around the school for him.
POV: YUKIO
SCENE:
Time: 11:00 a.m.
The scene switches to Mephisto’s office. Mephisto and Barthes are both waiting inside, and Yukio enters to receive materials on the Labyrinth Garden from Barthes.
Mephisto describes the Labyrinth Garden as something like “headquarters of the Knights of the True Cross” (exact words:「正十字騎士團の本部」). He expresses interest in it but then claims that he has an important meeting to attend to tomorrow, and that he will therefore be away for a while.
Mephisto orders Barthes to give the Labyrinth Garden key and materials to Yukio. Barthes does so reluctantly. Mephisto explains that there are three keys in total and that Barthes holds the remaining two. Mephisto also mentions how Yukio must feel rushed with the materials being given to him only the day prior, but then says that he should be fine. Yukio seems annoyed, but is then dismissed and leaves. He ends up settling down on a staircase to read through the materials, finding Barthes’ research and compilation to be admirable.
POV: RIN
SCENE: 弟の懐への羨望
Time: 12:00 p.m.
Rin eventually finds Yukio sitting on a staircase reading a file. Rin approaches him, thinking to himself that he’ll have to be extra friendly and make it seem as though he doesn’t really need the money. He asks Yukio what he’s doing, to which Yukio says that he’s reading materials for the next day’s training.
Rin comments on how difficult it must be to be a teacher and tells Yukio that everyone says that they feel better about the training with his guidance. Yukio says that he’s glad to hear it.
Rin then brings up how he’s run out of exorcism supplies. Yukio says that he’ll have to give him money, but solely for the exorcism supplies. He further asks Rin to write down the names, quantities, and costs of all of the supplies that he buys. Rin complains that this is unreasonable and points out how he doesn’t get enough money from Mephisto to live on each month. Yukio points out how Rin wastes too much money on things like manga and ice cream. Rin gets angry and storms off, saying that he’ll take care of the matter himself.
POV: YUKIO
SCENE: 弟の懐への羨望
Time: 12:00 p.m.
The scene initially plays out the same way that it does in Rin’s POV. After Rin leaves, Yukio notices Shiemi walking in his direction, looking down. She’s saying to herself how difficult it is to make friends. Yukio, worried, calls out to her and asks her if something’s wrong. She says that she’s fine, and nothing further happens.

The scene starts with Rin having returned to the fountain. He decides that, in order to get the money, he should get a part-time job. Shiemi suddenly appears, asking Rin if he’s ready for training and suggesting that they go into the forest to look for medicinal herbs. At Rin’s questioning of what she means, Shiemi explains that Yukio told her that Rin doesn’t have money to buy exorcism supplies. Rin seems irritated, but is ultimately agreeable and offers Shiemi 17 yen as a show of gratitude. Shiemi politely declines, internally surprised at how truly little money Rin has.
The scene then switches to the boys’ dorm cafeteria. Izumo is there, trying to encourage Kuro to play with her, but she stops, startled, when she hears Rin and Shiemi coming in. They ask Izumo what she’s doing there, and she flusteredly explains that she was just looking for Yukio. Rin explains that Yukio is still around school somewhere. He and Shiemi agree to leave, but are interrupted by Kuro asking if they’re going somewhere. Rin explains that he and Shiemi are going to the forest, he and invites Kuro to come with. Kuro instantly accepts. Izumo is about to leave before Shiemi tries to follow her, inviting her to come with them to the forest as well. Izumo walks away, completely disregarding her. Shiemi is clearly saddened by this, and Rin tells Shiemi that her voice is too quiet.
Rin, Shiemi, and Kuro walk towards the forest, encountering Neue and Barthes on the way. Neue notes how she’s learned that Rin is Yukio’s older brother, which Rin confirms. Neue then asks if Rin and Shiemi are going out together, and the two of them stare at each other without a word. She also comments on how the two of them get along well, at which Rin and Shiemi are both stunned. Barthes then approaches Rin, pointing out his sword. Rin is immediately suspicious, and becomes alarmed when Barthes asks to see it. Barthes explains that he can sense a powerful spirit within the sword even while it’s sheathed. Rin gives the excuse that there’s a “rule” under which he cannot show the sword to others. Barthes reluctantly shows understanding, but says something like “maybe next time,” and then leaves along with Neue, with Rin left in confusion and alarm.
SCENE:

Rin and the others continue on, and are suddenly greeted by Renzou, who claims that he is looking for Barthes. Rin explains that he’s around the school building and that he had just been talking to him a few minutes ago. Renzou runs off, leaving Rin and the others confused.
They then reach the forest and start looking for herbs. Rin thinks to himself that it’s like he and Shiemi are on a picnic. He gets distracted thinking about how he should have made lunch for them. Shiemi asks if he’s listening to her and points out how red Rin’s face is. Rin appears flustered.
POV: YUKIO
SCENE: いにしえの記録

The scene starts in the cram school hallway. Izumo meets up with Yukio, and they head to the library.
At the library, Yukio finds out from the librarian that documents on the Labyrinth Garden are located in the special archives, which is currently under the jurisdiction of Barthes. Yukio explains that he is also in charge of the Labyrinth Garden training. He and Izumo head towards the archives where they find Ryuji, Renzou, and Konekomaru waiting at the door. Yukio asks why they’re there, to which Ryuji explains that the three of them felt uneasy with Barthes’ lacking explanation about the Labyrinth, and so they decided to do their own research. Izumo tells him to get inside, but Renzou says that they can’t, and then moves to show that there is a naga blocking the entryway. Konekomaru explains that the naga is Barthes’ familiar and that it will attack anyone who tries to enter the archives. Yukio determines that they can’t exorcise it, then, and asks Konekomaru and Renzou to go find Barthes.
The two of them return with Barthes fifteen minutes later. Yukio asks Barthes if he and the exwires can enter the archive to study materials on the Labyrtinth. Barthes makes a comment about them being impatient, to which Yukio says that he just wants to be properly prepared. Barthes then explains that someone had taken documents from the archive without permission, which is why he now has a naga guarding it. He breaks the summoning circle for the naga, causing it to disappear, and then leaves.
Yukio and the others enter the archives, where they split up to gather as much information as they can.

Time: 3:00pm
After thirty minutes, Yukio asks everyone to reconvene and share what they’ve found. Ryuji first shares the information that he found on Rhone Rain, the creator of the Labyrinth. Ryuji explains that he read that Rhone Rain was legendary as the strongest paladin of the Middle Ages. Rhone had a demon possessing a whale as his familiar, and he would ride on its back, exterminating ghost ships that had been haunting the coasts of Europe. Rhone apparently also fought on equal terms with the ba’al. Ryuji lastly adds that Rhone was apparently very handsome. Renzou questions this, and Ryuji shows everyone a book page showing the only remaining portrait of Rhone, which depicts him in a full suit of armor, including a helmet obscuring the upper half of his head. Izumo is unsure. Renzou says that the portrait doesn’t actually give them a good idea of what he looked like, but that he “exudes an aura of handsomeness.” Ryuji finally adds that, at the height of his power, Rhone created the labyrinth, but then suddenly disappeared without leaving an apparent trace. Ryuji wasn’t able to find out any information beyond that, including information of when Rhone died.
Izumo then shares that she learned that the Labyrinth is a place where exorcists can recreate situations similar to those that they have experienced in real life. She says that, during Rhone’s rule as paladin, he developed a disease which was apparently caused by a demon called the Mara Dragon. The Mara Dragon had spread this disease, killing hundreds of thousands of people. Rhone ended up defeating the Mara Dragon and created a situation similar to it within the Labyrinth, with the purpose of teaching future exorcists for similar situations should they occur. Konekomaru adds that the Labyrinth came to be used as a training facility where exorcists created their own experiences as well.
Izumo asks if one can still get injured within the Labyrinth as it uses simulated experiences. Yukio explains that one indeed can as they really are fighting demons inside of it. This comes as a surprise to Konekomaru and Renzou. Yukio further says that the exwires will be under the supervision of intermediate-or-higher classes of exorcists, and that, even if there is a threat of injury, they will not die. This unsettles Konekomaru and Renzou even further, with Renzou asking if the training really is that serious. Yukio says that lots of exorcists have achieved great results with training in the Labyrinth, which motivates Ryuji and Izumo to go through with it.
Yukio asks the exwires to tell Rin and Shiemi what they’ve just learned. Ryuji says that he’ll tell Rin and that Izumo should tell Shiemi, which leads the two to a brief argument. Konekomaru asks that they stop arguing all of the time.
Yukio then wonders what Rin has been doing since their earlier conversation. Izumo says that Rin was going to the forest with Shiemi to pick herbs. Konekomaru says that he’ll join them, since Shiemi might be able to provide him with herbs that had been sold out. Everyone head out.
POV: RIN
SCENE:

Shiemi asks Rin how he makes friends. Rin says that he’s never had any friends, even as a child, and that he only had Yukio to play with. He further explains how he often skipped in middle school and was always alone. Shiemi says that it seems to her that Rin is surrounded by friends, and Rin asks her something along the lines of if she is surrounded too (exact words: そうか、じゃあお前も囲まれてるんじゃねーか?). Shiemi seems surprised and unsure, but Rin tells her not to worry about it. He then shows her the plants that he’s collected, but, upon looking through them, Shiemi says that they’re “wrong” and starts throwing them away. Rin apologizes, and then realizes that Kuro isn’t anywhere to be seen — that is, until they hear a loud noise, and Kuro appears in his large form. Rin says that Kuro is acting “kind of drunk”, and Shiemi points out that he has catnip. Kuro falls over, seeming to enjoy himself.
There is more noise, however, and then a chuchi appears. Rin is surprised at this, since it’s still light out. With Kuro being of no help in his current state, Rin pulls kurikara out of its case, leaving it sheathed. Shiemi summons Nee and orders him to bring out insect repellant. Rin is conflicted, not wanting to draw his sword in front of Shiemi. A naberius then appears behind him.
